PURCHASE, NY – Two members of Quorum Federal Credit Union (QFCU), Alexis Glennon, age 17, and Rachel A. Hunt, age 18, both of Arlington Heights, Ill., have won scholarships from the Credit Union Association of New York (CUANY) ($1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively) as well as $500 scholarships from Quorum.
Celeste Hoelzl, age 18, of Wilton, Conn., was awarded a $500 scholarship from Quorum. “Quorum is proud to participate in a scholarship program designed to recognize and reward members nationwide who pursue and excel in higher education,” said Bruno Sementilli, president/CEO of Quorum.
Alexis Glennon is a three-sport varsity athlete who is involved with leadership groups and volunteering. Her favorite volunteer experiences include working at homeless luncheons at a local church, traveling to New Orleans to work with Habitat for Humanity, and sharing her passion for sports with younger athletes. She will graduate from Prospect High School and plans to attend Indiana University.
Rachel Hunt enjoys playing volleyball, basketball and water skiing and is committed to service in her school, community and church. She also attends Prospect High School and plans to attend Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Celeste Hoelzl interests include running, biking, hiking and traveling. She will graduate from Wilton High School and plans to attend SUNY Geneseo.
Applications were judge by CUANY, and included a 300-500 word essay on the significance of “people helping people,” a principle essential to the philosophical foundation of credit unions (not-for-profit financial cooperatives that exist to serve members, not generate profit). Judging was also based on academic performance, extracurricular activities, honors, community service and leadership. This year, CUANY awarded a total of $13,500 in scholarships to 20 credit union members.
The Credit Union Association of New York (CUANY) (www.cuany.org) provides credit unions with a full range of services including education and training, advocacy, community outreach, human resources and compliance.
